Rigobert BONNE
(1729 - 1795)
Les Indes Orientales et leur Archipel
Original copper engraved map of Southeast Asia from India to the Philippines including the Maldives, Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the Moluques, from the Jean Lattre's edition of the Atlas Moderne ou Collection de cartes sur toutes les parties du globe terrestre issued in Paris in 1776.
Nice example printed on laid paper but later pasted on a sheet of tin cardboard, with margins around the platemark, with a slight browning and many small spots of foxing here and there and a bigger rust stain in the upper part, otherwise in general good condition and excellent watercolouring.
Rigobert Bonne was a very valued french cartographer and produced some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the second half of the XVIIIth century, his career arrived at the top when succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer in France in 1773, becoming the chief of the Depot de la Marine, the most important French cartographic and hydrographic institution under the reign of Louis XVI.
