Original steel engraving from the bronze sculpture by Randolph John Rogers (Waterloo, New York 1825 – Rome 1892) appeared in 1877 on the famous English Art Periodical “The Art Journal” published in London by Virtue & Co. from the thirties of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century.
Very nice example in perfect general condition.
William Seward (1801 – 1872) was a relevant american politician.
He was New York Governor from 1839 to 1843, United States Senator from 1849 to 1861 and Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869 under Lincoln and Johnson Government.
He remain in american political history for his successfull battles against slavery practise, the european recognition of the Confederation during the Civil War (1861 – 1865) and for the purchase of the Alaska Territory from Russia (1861).
Rogers bronze sculpture situated on a large pedestal of variegated Italian marble was unveiled in 1876 and now is located in Madison Square Park Manhattan New York, it is considered the first monument of the city dedicated to a Newyorker.
