Magnificent engraved World map in Mercator projection showing the known parts of the globe, dated in the decorative cartouche 1748 and coming from a german version of the famous work of Prévost d'Exiles Histoire Générale des Voyages published in Paris by Didot from 1746 to 1789.
In the lower part of the map, at center of the Ocean, there is a beautiful 32 point compass rose surmounted by a French Fleur de Lys.
Very nice example printed on two jointed sheets of laid paper showing a watermark Name similar to Heawood 3272 catalogued as indetermined but relating to french paper production of the XVIIIth century, with wide margins around the platemark and in excellent general condition with a recent bright accurate watercolouring.

Bellin was the first chief Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine and worked at the Dépot de cartes, plans et journaux du Ministère de la Marine for a long time, carrying out cartographic works of the highest quality, he was also a Member of the Royal Society of London.
